Stunell takes the fight for Metrolink to Bournemouth

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 23rd Sep 2004

The fight for the Manchester metrolink has been taken to the Liberal Democrat Party Conference by local MP Andrew Stunell.

Andrew Stunell said:

"I'm delighted that Charles Kennedy and the whole party are now backing the case for metrolink and a fully integrated transport system across Greater Manchester."

"Stockport needs the metrolink to cut down on traffic congestion and reduce pollution and incidents of pollution related illnesses, like asthma that blight the lives of so many people who live close to traffic hot spots in Stockport.

Andrew Stunell and Patsy Calton were joined by Stockport chamber of commerce, the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority and the Regional Development Agency to put North West issues at the forefront of the Conference agenda.

Andrew Stunell said:

"The Government has reneged on every promise it has made to give Greater Manchester the integrated transport system it needs. That is why a Regional Assembly is key to fighting for our interests against central arbitrary decision making. END
