Stunell Campaigns to Axe the Tax

12.39.20pm UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 15th Apr 2005

"Council Tax is very Unfair. Often the poorest pensioners have to pay nearly SIX times more of their income in council tax payments as the wealthiest people," said Andrew Stunell.

The Liberal democrats plan to scrap Council Tax. Their nationwide campaign is supported by Stockport Council and already has massive support from local residents.

Over the coming week, Andrew Stunell will be gathering a petition to Axe the Tax at precincts and shopping centres around Hazel Grove, Bredbury, Romiley, Hawk Green, Marple, Offerton and Woodley.

Andrew Stunell added:

"The Tories invented the Council Tax when they had to scrap the disliked Poll Tax. The system has never been a fair one and the Labour Government's underfunding of local authorities has made the situation even worse."

For more details of the campaign, or if you would like to sign the petition, please contact Andrew Stunell on 0161 4067070 or 07779 595609.
