Stunell slams Stockport hearing aid waiting lists

Hearing

New figures from the British Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists show that Stockport residents have to wait 9 months longer for a digital hearing aid than patients from other areas in Greater Manchester. Now Hazel Grove MP, Andrew Stunell has challenged the NHS to stump up the cash to improve support for hearing impaired people in Stockport.

Hazel Grove MP, Andrew Stunell said:

"Digital hearing aids can improve the quality of life for the thousands of hearing impaired people in Stockport. Yet on average, Stockport residents have to wait one whole year for a hearing test, and then another 6 weeks to have their first hearing aid supplied by the NHS.

"That is 43 weeks longer than in the Royal Infirmary in Manchester, 44 weeks longer than at Withington Hospital, and 5 months longer than the average waiting time in the North West.

"It should be as easy to get a decent hearing aid as a decent pair of glasses. If you can walk into a high street optician and get a pair of glasses in a matter of hours, it really should not take a year to get a hearing aid." ENDS

Notes to Editors

1. The full survey results are published on the BSHAA website, www.bshaa.com. The average total waiting time for a hearing test and hearing aid fitting is 14 weeks at Manchester Withington Hospital, 10-15 weeks at Manchester Royal Infirmary and 58 + weeks at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport.

2. The Audit Commission say that between five and six million people in the UK would benefit from having a hearing aid, but only 2 million people have one.

3. The British Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists represents and promotes the private hearing aid profession in the UK. Around two thirds of the 1,300 hearing aid dispensers in the United Kingdom are members of the Society.
