Stunell meets gas chiefs as gas prices fuel local concern10.21.59am UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 15th Feb 2006
This week, local MP, Andrew Stunell held an emergency meeting in Westminster with Centrica chiefs to discuss the recent massive price hikes in wholesale gas prices which have hit major local employers such as Romiley Board Mills. Speaking after the meeting, Hazel Grove MP, Andrew Stunell said: "Centrica is better known as British Gas, and is the major UK gas supplier. For some industrial consumers prices have doubled in a year, undermining their competitive position and threatening jobs." Centrica told Mr Stunell that although there isn't a shortage of gas worldwide, there does seem to be a real problem getting the right amount to the UK. That was leading to panic buying, pushing prices up to record levels. Mr Stunell added: "I am making the strongest case I can for prices in the UK to be brought into line with those in the rest of Europe so that we can get gas bills down to an affordable level, not just for industry, but for consumers as well."
