Stunell challenges minister on unsafe schools1.08.04pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 19th Apr 2006
Today, local MP, Andrew Stunell challenged the Government on their failure to fit fire sprinkler systems in schools. Speaking in Parliament, Hazel Grove MP, Andrew Stunell quizzed Fire Minister, Jim Fitzpatrick, saying: "The Minister will know that three schools a day suffer fire damage. Most of these are arson and most are started by pupils. Increasing numbers of fires are started during school time and are putting many more children's lives at risk. "Will the Minister come forward and require all new and extended school premises to be fitted with sprinklers to protect children against the risk of fires?" Mr Stunell has teamed up with Greater Manchester's Chief Fire Officer and fire chiefs across the country with this demand. Speaking after the debate, Mr Stunell added: "Fire sprinklers in schools save lives and cut costs. They should not be treated as an optional add-on for high risk buildings like schools. "School arson costs £100 million a year and disrupts the education of 100,000 pupils. Sprinkler systems repay their cost within five years. This makes them not only a sound investment, but also essential in preserving an uninterrupted school year for our children." ENDS
