Hazel Grove MP calls for therapy for sexually abused children

This week, local MP, Andrew Stunell, joined the NSPCC at the launch of their new campaign, 'Don't Hide It', calling on the Government to ensure that local therapeutic services are available for all children who have suffered sexual abuse.

Commenting at the event, Mr Stunell said:

"I am giving my wholehearted support to the NSPCC's 'Don't Hide It' campaign. It is incredibly sad that over eight and a half thousand children called Childline about sexual abuse last year, and just over half of those calls were about rape.

"These are alarming numbers, and every one of these children should receive support to help them overcome the trauma they've endured.

"I am calling on the Secretary of State for Health to take action to ensure that children in Stockport and across the country have full access to therapeutic services. We need a detailed analysis of current provision and a fully funded delivery plan for Stockport."

It has been estimated that 90 per cent of children known to have suffered sexual abuse currently do not receive support. The benefits of such services in helping children recover are well documented. A 13 year old girl who received therapy after being sexually abused by her cousin said:

"It got easier every week…It changed me a lot. I'm stronger, more confident and I'm not as shy or quiet. I'm more bubbly and I look forward to things now. I love my life now 'cause I've got more hope." ENDS
