STUNELL CAMPAIGNS AGAINST THREAT TO ABBEYFIELD SOCIETY11.19.26am UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 31st Jul 2006 Andrew Stunell has told the government that new 'Supporting People' contracts threaten the care provided to some Stockport care home residents. Homes run by charities like the Abbeyfield Society are being starved of cash because of a £600 million gap in government funding. The new contracts with local councils leave the homes short of money to care for their residents. Mr Stunell said "Abbeyfield does vital work looking after older people. It supports some of the most vulnerable members of our society."
"Unfortunately its services are currently being threatened by a big gap in funding." "These contracts are meant to ensure that the best care is provided, but if the work of organisations like the Abbeyfield Society is being threatened as a result then these contracts must be backed up with more government cash now." ENDS
