"Offices should lead the way in reducing carbon emissions" says local MP2.07.49pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 14th Aug 2006 Local MP Andrew Stunell is campaigning to reduce carbon emissions in offices. The Commercial and Public Services Sector use of energy is rapidly increasing and is expanding at the fastest rate after aviation. This is a result of the dramatic rise in the use of computers and other electrical equipment. Its use of electricity, which has a particularly high carbon footprint, is expected to grow by nearly 45% from 1990 to 2020. Mr Stunell said "It is time to face up to the impact of Climate Change. The need for urgent action to cut our carbon emissions is greater than ever. This has to be central to the Government's policy." "I am supporting the Climate Change (Commercial and Public Services Sector) Bill which will set legally binding targets for reducing energy usage in the commercial sector and further targets for energy production from renewable sources, Combined Heat and Power and microgeneration." "Climate Change is something that concerns us all and it is important that businesses act to reduce carbon emissions. This Bill will ensure that they do that and will be crucial in the fight against Climate Change."
