Save Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form College Leisure Centres - Stunell

Andrew Stunell MP speaking in the House of Commons

Hazel Grove MP, Andrew Stunell has urged Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form College to rethink its decision to close down the leisure centres at both of their sites at the end of this year.

Commenting on the news, Mr Stunell said:

"The Marple Centre is well used by local community groups. I am very disappointed with the Sixth Form College's decision to close it. We should be doing everything we can to encourage young people to stay fit and healthy.

"This will also put local voluntary and community groups who use the centres, such as the Rose Hill Rovers Football Club and the Holiday Children's Club, out in the cold.

"Closing the leisure centres will be a big set back to efforts to spread the 'keep fit' message, and I am asking the College to think again."

ENDS

Notes to editors:

The two leisure centres will close on the 31st December 2006.
