An attack by masked raiders at Morrisons on Stockport Road last November has led to Parliamentary action by local MP, Andrew Stunell.

Commenting on his campaign, Mr Stunell said:

"The impact of such terrifying attacks on security staff can be serious and lifelong even if, mercifully, there are no physical injuries.

"Everybody has a right to be safe at work. Alarmingly, attacks on cash couriers rose by 24% last year, and more attackers are using violent weapons.

"I have called on the Home Secretary to recognise attacks on security companies as a human rather than just a business crime, and to tackle this problem urgently, giving it the police support it deserves."

Now Mr Stunell has backed up his plea with a Parliamentary Motion calling for action. ENDS

Notes to Editors: -

1. The text of the Parliamentary Motion reads:

CASH AND VALUABLES IN TRANSIT ATTACKS

"That this House deplores the number of cash and valuables in transit (CVIT) attacks on security industry staff over the past two years; is concerned about the increased use of violent weapons such as guns and knives in such attacks; notes that in 2004 a member of the public was tragically killed and a number of staff were shot and stabbed; commends the bravery of the crews who deliver the cash; recognises that the provision of cash is an essential service to consumers and business alike; welcomes the joint initiatives pursued by Group 4 Securicor, GMB union, BSIA and police forces in order to prevent attacks and protect employees and the general public; calls on the Government to recognise CVIT attacks as a human rather than purely a business crime and to tackle this problem urgently as part of its wider organised crime agenda."

2. Mr Stunell is also fighting for the 216 Officer cut in Greater Manchester Police to be reversed and for a national 'Cut Crime' initiative.
