Unequal Cancer Treatment Must End, says Stunell4.23.41pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 6th Aug 2007
New treatment for prostate cancer sufferers should be available nationwide, says local MP, Andrew Stunell. He is backing a call in Parliament for a big step up in LDR prostate treatment. The MP for Hazel Grove said: "In Stockport 50 families a year have to face up to the reality of a prostate cancer diagnosis. This new treatment brings hope to the thousands of people nationally who suffer from this illness. "But access to treatment is patchy. That means that one in six men with prostate cancer are denied these new options. "I have joined together with other MPs to call on the Government to support the work of advisory groups who are aiming to boost access to treatment." ENDS Notes to Editors: 1. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer in men. 2. It causes more than 50 deaths in Stockport each year. 3. Low Dose Rate (LDR) Prostate Brachytherapy has been found to offer patients improved quality of life after treatment compared with other treatments. 4.
