New charity will speak up for older people, says local MP

A local MP has welcomed news that two of Britain's most successful charities for older people are planning to merge.

The directors of Help the Aged and Age Concern want to bring the two charities together to form one united organisation representing the interests of the elderly. The new charity, which will be set up next year, would be one of the largest voluntary sector groups in the country.

Andrew Stunell, the Hazel Grove MP, gave his support to the idea and said the new charity would be a great help to older people in Stockport.

Mr Stunell said:

"I am delighted that Help the Aged and Age Concern are planning to come together as one group. Having one of the largest charities in Britain speaking up for the elderly with a united voice will be a tremendous step forward.

"This is a difficult time for many pensioners on fixed incomes in Stockport, who are having to cope with rising costs of food, electricity and gas.

"Both Age Concern and Help the Aged have a fantastic record of fighting to free older people from poverty, isolation and neglect. I am sure the new charity will be even more effective in tackling the problems that older people face."
