Work of 'Land Girls' finally recognised - Stunell

Today, Local MP, Andrew Stunell, joined President of the Women's Land Army Society, Mrs Jean Procter MBE, and other former 'Land Girls' to present them with special commemorative badges celebrating their efforts during the First and Second World Wars.

The badges are being awarded as part of a scheme, launched by the Government, to acknowledge their service and acknowledging the debt that the country owes to the Women's Land Army and Women's Timber Corps.

The Women's Land Army (WLA), more commonly known as the Land Girls, was formed at the outbreak of World War II to work on the land, freeing the male workers to go to war. By 1943 there were some 80,000 young women working in every aspect of agriculture to feed the nation.

Commenting, Mr Stunell said:

"It's an honour to be able to be able to present this badge to our local 'Land Girls'. Their work and dedication was equal to their male counterparts, and I'm glad it is finally being recognised.
